Buster

It is very important to our rescue that our greyhounds get adopted into a lovely family life, and Buster is such a well deserving example of this...

A Forever Home Needed For Buster.

It is very important to our rescue that our greyhounds get adopted into a lovely family life, and Buster is such a well deserving example of this. He has been at the kennels for 15 months and because he is such a lovely dog, we are desperate for him to find that special family.

Buster was actually saved from being put to sleep at the track…Not fast enough. That’s the reason. He was brought to us by the trainer who saved him.

We have found him to be so loving and we are finding it so sad that he has been here for so long. Some of our greyhounds are here for life because they have issues with the outside world but Buster has no issues and he loves people. He is a very clean dog with a bit of fun about him.

What we don’t want is for him to spend the rest of his life in kennels as it would be such a waste when he has such a lot to give.

So please, if you think you can offer a very special greyhound a place in your life, where we are sure that you will get a lot of love back from him, then please contact us.

Thank you.

We are delighted to announce that Buster has finally found his new home! And he is a big, happy boy!

Thunder would be an addition to anyone’s settee. He is now looking for his forever home to relax and take it easy and be loved.

If you think you have what Thunder is looking for, then please contact us as soon as possible.

Thunder has now been re-homed, re-named "Wolfie" & can be seen enjoying some quality snooze time in his new home.

Drac and Helsin

Our beautiful 11 month old Saluki X Greyhound brothers have arrived from a Romanian circus

The most perfect set of eight legs I have ever had the pleasure to rescue. Our beautiful 11 month old Saluki X Greyhound brothers have arrived from a Romanian circus, having the ordeal of not just a terrible start to their lives but also a 5 day journey from Romania to us.

These boys need a very special home and a very loving family.

As they are from Romania we have called the Drac & Helsin lol.

Helsin, the darker of the two, arrived as a very nervous young man, Drac is very much the protector of the two and looks after his brother. They simply adore each other.

But, I must say after a good meal and cuddles, it took them little more than an hour to show us what wonderful characters they really are.

After such a sad start to their lives. we are not prepared to re-home them seperately. They must go as a pair as they deserve to stay together. They are perfect partners, playful and loving, waiting for that special home.

For more information on these lovely boys, please contact us direct by phone.

They are fully vaccinated, castrated and passported and ready to give such pleasure and love to the right home.

I can say these dogs are out of this world, so very, very special, handsome and unique characters.

If you think you can give these 2 boys what they need then please contact the rescue on  01205 290145

A big thank you to Wendy Etheridge for getting these dogs to safety. We will look after them and get them the caring home they deserve.

On sponsorship only for now as need some training –  they are still pups in their heads and need a bit of work due to their size! X

Otis

Waggy tailed happy boy...

Otis has been rehomed to Charlotte! And he is HER dog!

Otis went to his new home on Sunday 30th July 2017 and is now with his new very proud owner Charlotte who absolutely loves Otis to bits!

Well this young man, like many before him has certainly landed on his paws! He knew straight away she had come for him!!! He spoke to her as soon as she arrived at the kennels.

On arrival at his new home Otis took no time at all in settling in and checking out his new surroundings with Charlottes' dad - (who works for the lift company Otis) , he was straight into the garage with him at his side having a nosey, then on into the kitchen to Charlottes' mum to check out his treat cupboard (which his noticed straight away)!

On the rehoming photos' we asked if they would all like to gather for the pictures to which we were quickly put right by Charlotte that Otis was HER dog and that she would be in the picture ahaha!!! Maybe on day the others may get a look in Otis!! But you are truly loved!!!

Thank you Charlotte (and your lovely family ahaha) for making Otis's life a happy one.

Karen is looking forward to the updates as we all are!!! We all miss you Otis but as we know - you have your life ahead of you now with your special family. And...That is what it is all about young man xxx Be happy boy - we know you will be xxx

Meet Alan

Yes this is Alan!

Alan (and I have to keep using his name)! – he is a big softy! He loves people but he can be a bit shy sometimes!

He loves to play and likes to spend time throwing things around and chasing them!
He loves to be cuddled. He has always been kennelled on his own because he does prefer his own space in his kennel.
He is great out and about with other dogs but he would be better suited as an only dog with him preferring his own space indoors.

Pudding

Pudding was a kitten born feral but reared at the rescue...

He is one of 3 hand reared Kittens (hand reared by Karen). They were born to one of the feral cats before we could catch them to have them neutered!

The mother just dropped them and they would have died. Karen spent weeks of sleepless nights feeding and looking after their every need! Along with all her other duties at greyhound rescue!

His brother Rice and Sago are the spitting image of him.

We did find out their father was the one and only….Whitey Almighty who we also have living here!

We have had a number of cats turn up at the rescue which is why we have start re-homing them and now started a sponsorship scheme for the cats too.

We have now caught and had all the feral cat neutered and so no more kittens hopefully! We are however always on the watch for the next one turning up as it seems people just cannot afford to keep them or simply have enough!

We just wish people would think and talk more before getting animals and make the decision properly. After all, they deserve a good & happy life too, don’t they?

Trio has passed away

Trio is quite a nervous little boy...

Meet Trio

It is with the greatest sadness that we have only just been able to bring ourselves to write this...But we lost our beautiful Trio at only 5 years old to Kidney cancer.

He fought so hard to survive as he had from the moment he was born and hand reared by Karen. He was the only surviving one of the litter.

He was one of the most special 'spiritual' cats...funny, loving - just an absolute pleasure to be around and since Karen has been too unwell to get upstairs on a night, I had the fun times of Trio sleeping on my head and him doing my hair on a morning!

We watched The old game shows when he or I couldn't sleep and he really liked 'Bullseye... I used to says to him ... ' you can't beat a bit of bully' and he used to sit on my chest just watching the darts!!! How a little man like that can rip out your hearts....and me? I was terrified of cats up until I met this little fella. Now....I adore them! He even helped me through the loss of my greyhound Beau recently. You see, they know when you need them...But he just couldn't stay. And you have to always do what is right for them - no matter how it affects you. If not....you are in it for the wrong reason.

I know it broke Karens heart... Each time I ever took Trio out to the vet she used to say ' have you got the crate locked right?' 'Make sure the door is to your body and your hands are under it because if you lose him you better not come back or .... I knew the rest'! She had a very special bond with him - a bit like with her Duke and Quina.

I am writing this over 2 months on and tears are falling down my face.....I am so honoured that Karen let him into my life. I cannot thank her enough.

Night Night Tri Me Me Me xxx

(Trio is 4 years old and was hand reared by Karen at the rescue.

He is the most sensitive cat you will meet. He is so sweet and a very beautiful young boy.

Trio always looks after you if you feel unwell and although he is quite a nervous little boy he is such a kind hearted soul.

If you would like to sponsor Trio then please contact us.

He will be your forever friend. xxx)

Trio passed away after a massive battle with kidney cancer. He was one of the bravest cats we have ever seen and a real fighter throughout his short life of 5 years.

Mr Castor - has passed away

Mr Castor stays in the cottage and was a great friend of our now departed beautiful greyhound girl Wolfie...

This is Mr Castor the Bengal. He lives with us in the house at Crimea Cottage and has been with us now for a number of years. He would love to hear from you! If you would like to sponsor Mr Castor, please get in touch.

Sadly, Castor developed kidney failure and lost his battle and fell to sleep in Karens arms.

He was only with us a short time but made such an impact.

What a lovely little boy Castor - such a hard worker as a show and stud cat and did not get much of a retirement here at the rescue, but at least he got some love and tlc and he did know he was loved.

Sleep tight young man - forever in our hearts xxx

Quina

Quina is one of the horses at the rescue that fought laminitis...

Quina is one of the horses at the rescue that belongs personally to Karen and is not one of the rescue animals but just shows that no matter what - nothing is straight forward. Luck never seems to be on our side......Update on Quina - she is fighting the biggest battle of her life....and so is Karen. This is heartbreaking. 02.06.2018

Below is the story of her battle with Laminitis.

This may be a very different story for a website for Greyhounds but it is a personal one from myself, Karen Schultz and it is written for horse owners, from my heart, in the hope that it will find people and they will know that they are not the only ones coping with the horrendous disease of their beloved horse with LAMINITIS.

It takes you and your horse to a degree of physical and mental exhaustion. Down a road of pain, frustration, misery and doubt to where this hellish disease will end.

I became tormented with what was the best for my dear Quina. There was a time when I just couldn’t bare her in such pain. Finding her at times laid groaning, I came very close to letting her go…..twice in fact.

It’s a situation that leaves owners feeling helpless as they watch this terrible illness. And it’s not just the little fat ponies that get laminitis, it can attack and equine.

Quina had 8 weeks box rest with her first bout, then 2 weeks she was fine, until it hit her again. My heart sank and the worst was still to come.

Luckily for me, my vet is willing to go along with treatment, many vets are not and it seems the easy answer is to put them to sleep!

Even the everyday treatment of medication is hard. You have got to look at every way to administer it as once your horse suspects there are drugs in their food etc!

The mornings of dread going down to the stables and being physically sick, wondering what your horse will be like. Each new day becomes a fear.

You can read and read the internet, do this, do that, don’t do this, don’t do that, until you feel so confused it really doesn’t work.

So, I thought, right, I will do what I feel is the right way for my horse. I will go with my gut feelings (it’s the best). I will also listen to what I believe my horse is needing and dig out all my own reserves of strength needed to get her through this.

Every day, even though she had painkillers, I had the vet out days and days for him to inject her with painkiller just to keep her comfortable when she was at her worst.

Quinas’ Laminitis was caused by an infection. People think that Laminitis is just an illness to do with too much feed or grass. That’s rubbish. It can be mechanical, stress and many other things that cause it.

Quina is certainly NOT overweight in any way. She is beautifully slim.

So 4 months down the line we still battle on and after Xrays etc , I had her fitted with the plastic imprint shoes to take the weight off her soles and the wall of the hooves.

I was so grateful when the main man agreed to do this and he was brilliant, so kind of him as he came all the way from Wiltshire to Quina. This is going to be a long job to get my horse right, maybe 6 months, maybe a year but as long as Quina can be brave, then I can be.

Five things you need when dealing with a horse with Laminitis:

No 1:

Insure your horse – you never know. I didn’t and when I bought Quina, I was told she was 12 years old, Oh no….she is actually 18. So for her to go through all this has proved to me she is happy and wants to survive but you all know yourselves when you have a bond with a horse, it’s the most powerful thing you’ve got for them to survive whatever. For very little, insure your horse. Quina is already over £7000.00 in bills.

No 2:

Gut Feeling – go with what you feel – another powerful aid to go with what your horse needs. Go with their character and strength. Believe in them and what they can cope with, which is probably more than you imagined.

No 3:

Choose your vet carefully – make sure you choose a vet that is in the profession for the right reason – COMPASSION – as Quinas’ vet is. One that will go out of his way to save an animal and work with you and one you can talk to without all the technical rubbish.

No 4:

Do not leave any stone unturned. Remember horses are spiritual and sensitive. Don’t rule healing powers out and for that I thank Janis Culotta Turek for sending healing to Quina – because believe me, she made a difference to Quinas’ recovery.

No 5:

You need someone close – to help you through this hell. Someone you trust, someone to listen and unfortunately, to take your frustration, anger, tears, illness and exhaustion. I have and I don’t know how she has put up with me. God knows but Dawn has been my backbone, which normally I don’t need. Believe me, this is a must to have someone there for you.

Look At Me Now!

This is an ongoing story throughout Quina’s recovery.

And I need to say a big thank you to Quina’s vet, Ian Laird and Sharon (Ians’ Partner) from New York in Lincolnshire, for all their help and support and professional input throughout Quinas’ illness. They have been a massive help. If there is any vet in the right profession, Ian is the one.

A big thank you to Andrew Poynton of Inprint Equine Foot care, who dropped everything to personally come and fit his imprint shoes on Quina. It was amazing to get the top man in the Country all the way from Wiltshire.

Blue

Blue is a 23 year old ex race horse that we took on as no horse sanctuary would take her...

Blue is a 23 year old ex race horse that we took on as no horse sanctuary would take her. We were contacted about this horse that was not being properly cared for and we tried and tried along with this lady to get her into a sanctuary after the owner agreed to let her go as had no time for the horse and was not looking after her.

After trying without success we felt we had no choice, as we had one spare stable although it was full of hay and feed! But we had to take Blue. And it was a good job we did as when she arrived, we had not seen anything like it. She was a total starvation case. She was so thin you could see every bone and she hair was so long we thought she had cushings disease.  She was unrecognisable as a once thoroughbred race horse! We got the vet out straight away and a long journey started to nurse Blue back to health. This had to be done very slowly. Luckily, Blue did not have cushings. Her hair was so long due to the neglect of being left out in all weathers with no cover, no regular food or water.

Blue has only been with us a mater of a few months and you would not believe the difference. Our vet cannot believe it is the same horse. She looks amazing. But it has taken it’s toll. We had to think long and hard as we are a Greyhound Rescue who also rescue cats as they found us. But, this horse also found us as other have. I am sure many other animals will now too! We had no choice but to take Blue. She is a living creature who could not fend for herself. She was neglected, staved of food, water and shelter. She would had died. There is no doubt about that.

We rescue those that need us. She also gave her all to the racing industry. This leads me on to what happened next….. One of our other horses, Quina became devastatingly ill with the most severe case of chronic laminitis.
